Uncertainty
Updated: Dec 6, 2020
The coronavirus pandemic is something that has hit people really hard and has brought in a lot of uncertainty. We don't know the answers to so many of our questions and that drives us crazy. If we knew how long the pandemic would last, wouldn't that be amazing? but we don't know, so what do you do when thoughts of uncertainty plague your heart and mind?
These last few months were a period of uncertainty for me. I was worried about my future and where it will lead. Whether I was capable of the tasks at hand or fail miserably. That uncertainty turned into fear and anxiety and brought me down mentally. I had to recoup and figure out a way to overcome my constant questions about the future and my fears.
So I went to the usual place for advice, my Bible, and also my secret weapon Prayer.
These are the things I learned:
Trust in God's timing: I not only saw it in my life but in others as well. It's hard but God makes all things beautiful in His time (Ecclesiastes 3:11). His timing is always perfect
Remember the promises and the prayers God has answered in your life: I have a book where I write down all the prayers He has answered and that encourages me. Seeing that lists really uplifts and motivates me to keep moving forward. I also declare the promises He has given me over and over again which brings me relief. Psalm 119:50-“This is my comfort in my affliction, for Your word has given me life.”
Prayer is the weapon of choice (EPHESIANS 6:10-18)- When I pray before I study, there is a sudden rush of peace and encouragement which I need for the day. I learned to go to God for help. When I didn't feel like studying, I prayed. When I felt anxious and discouraged, I prayed and when I couldn't make sense of anything, guess what, I prayed. These moments of prayer consisted of a few words spoken or just wailing or even silence but I learned to accept the fact that I can't do this alone and I need my Father, Friend, the counselor who is MY GOD. There is nothing more powerful than going down on your knees and crying out to the Lord.
Submit to the Lord - I had to learn to let go of the control, I had over my life. I didn't know the answer to any of the questions that I had in my brain but I knew God did and so I let go and gave it to God because I trust in Him. JEREMIAH 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. I will warn you it's the most difficult thing to do but when you do, you will see the change in your life. The change may be a particular situation or your perspective might entirely change which was what happened to me
Tune out the world- the world will tell you a lot of things which may very well add nothing to your situation but just make it worse, so it is important to tune into God's voice and see what He has to say because of course for obvious reasons, He is always right. I'm not saying to not listen to people at all but be able to understand if this is what God's wants for me? That of course comes with practice mainly through prayer and the guidance of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. John 16:13- But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.
A teaching moment: I learned a lot of things during this period. There were some things, I needed to change and become better at. As you read from this entire post, you know what I mean. God is maybe using this time to prepare you for what lies ahead or teach you certain things that you need to know. We need to be like Mary who sat at Jesus' feet and listen to Him as He teaches us.
And finally, ROMANS 8:28 - And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. Despite how hard these periods of uncertainty and waiting are, we can be sure that God's plan is good
Living in Uncertainty is not easy. I might not know all the answers but I know that I am never alone. Even in the midst of the storm, He is there with me, giving me strength. It's the story, I'll never stop telling.
Father God, we pray that you would give us the strength and guidance to help us with our uncertainties. Help us to trust you and submit to your hands. Help us to always remember, that you are with us and you will help us through this storm. We know that everything works for good according to your purpose.....Amen
I leave you with a song that accurately describes that even through these uncertain times, how God's hands worked in our lives.
