All glory to God
Praise be to the Lord my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle. 2He is my loving God and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield, in whom I take refuge, who subdues peoples under me. 3 Lord, what are human beings that you care for them, mere mortals, that you think of them? 4They are like a breath; their days are like a fleeting shadow. 5Part your heavens, Lord, and come down; touch the mountains, so that they smoke. 6Send forth lightning and scatter the enemy; shoot your arrows and rout them. 7Reach down your hand from on high; deliver me and rescue me from the mighty waters, from the hands of foreigners 8whose mouths are full of lies, whose right hands are deceitful. 9I will sing a new song to you, my God; on the ten-stringed lyre, I will make music to you, 10to the One who gives victory to kings, who delivers his servant David. From the deadly sword 11deliver me; rescue me from the hands of foreigners whose mouths are full of lies, whose right hands are deceitful. 12Then our sons in their youth will be like well-nurtured plants, and our daughters will be like pillars carved to adorn a palace. 13Our barns will be filled with every kind of provision. Our sheep will increase by thousands, by tens of thousands in our fields; 14our oxen will draw heavy loads.144:14 Or our chieftains will be firmly established There will be no breaching of walls, no going into captivity, no cry of distress in our streets. 15Blessed is the people of whom this is true; blessed are the people whose God is the Lord.
David, the great king of Israel, was a great warrior who won many battles but he didn't praise himself or his skill or his talents but he gave the glory to God for all he had accomplished. He accepted that the talents and skills that he had were from God. He knew the battles that he had won were because of God. He understood the amazing power of God and bowed down to Him. He gives credit where it is due. He submitted himself and attributed who he was and what he had done to God.
We often forget to give thanks to God and acknowledge that God is the reason for who we are. We rely on our own strength and skills with arrogance. In a world, where the 'me' culture has taken root, there is no longer a place for God instead we are told to depend on ourselves. We are limited in many ways but God can do anything. When David stood in front of the giant, he didn't have the soldier's gear or any weapons to defeat Goliath. All he had was a sling and a stone. People mocked him but he did not place his trust in himself nor the weapons but he put his trust in God. God made David, a shepherd's boy, who has no experience in fighting a war, a simple sling and stone to defeat Goliath. That is the power of God.
In this chapter, we see David's humbleness. An attribute that is lacking these days. We have cast aside humility as it represents being weak but God says in Matthew 5:5 - Blessed are humble for they will inherit the earth. God calls us to humble ourselves and not boast in ourselves but in our God. Because David submitted himself to God, he was blessed and he was called a man after God's own heart.
So let us humble ourselves before God and give glory to Him who deserves it for who we are and what we have accomplished is because of Him.
